The Washington Capitals celebrated a historic win against the Chicago Blackhawks as Alexander Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record. That said, members of the 2018 Stanley Cup team were in attendance to cheer on their former captain, but unfortunately -- they missed the best part of the night.

Yesterday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks sparked worldwide interest -- and for good reason.
Coming into last night's matchup, Alexander Ovechkin was one hat trick away from cementing his legacy.
While the Capitals' captain fell one goal shy of the shy of the record, he did manage to tie the record, but unfortunately, his former teammates missed the moment -- which has led to some hard feelings.

T.J Oshie recalls missing Alexander Ovechkin's goal

Sitting down with Monumental Sports Network analyst Tarik El-Bashir, T.J. Oshie recounts the events leading up to Ovechkin's record-tying goal.
«I was walking right here actually,» Oshie told Monumental Sports Network's Tarik El-Bashir post-game, gesturing to the hallway on the suite level of Capital One Arena. «We heard the roars and obviously Wayne's in the building and a couple of us wanted to head over to Ted's suite and say 'Hi', so we said 'Let's sneak down there real quick,' the power play just ended and we heard the roars and we were like 'No, no way."

«We're like 'Who scored?' and they're like 'The TV's delayed, I don't know!' so we ran over and saw it and I was like 'I can't believe we missed it', but in the building, we were here,» he continued.

During the postgame show, Devante Smith-Pelley confirmed the devastating mishap.
«Yeah it was hilarious because they got the power play and they killed it off so we were like 'alright let's go now,' let's say hi to Gary and Wayne and stuff like that and as soon as we got out of the elevator and into the halls, the walls were almost shaking and we were like 'no way' and so we ran to the TVs and saw it that way but like Oshie said, we were in the building so that counts,» Smith-Pelley said.

Although T.J. Oshie missed the record-tying goal, it didn't prevent him from enjoying the monumental moment.
«[It was] amazing,» he said. «When I'm not playing and I'm watching from afar, you really step back and are like, 'gosh that's a lot of goals.' That's a huge number and to stay healthy enough to even get there is - I mean as a man speaking from experience - that's hard to do in itself, so, it was amazing for me and my family to be here tonight.»

Alexander Ovechkin will look to close out the record on Sunday when the Washington Capitals take on the New York Islanders.
