T.J. Oshie to make 'Special Announcement'
TJ Oshie will be making a 'Special Announcement' on June 9, at Washington Harbor in Georgetown, the seven-year anniversary of when the Washington Capitals swan in the fountain after they had won the 2018 Stanley Cup.
The special event is free and open to all, and will take place between 5pm and 7pm. Oshie is set to speak to those attending at 5:30pm, followed by a Q&A session with Sports Network's Joe Beniniti and Craig Laughlin.
Though it's not required for admission, fans are asked to RSVP at washcaps.com/TJ77.
Oshie spent this entire past season on long-term injured reserve due to an ongoing back issue. His contract expires this summer.
TJ had stated at the end of the 2023-24 season that he would step away from hockey if he couldn't find 'an answer and a fix' to his recurring back troubles. He missed 92 games because of the injury over the last three seasons, dressing for 154 of a possible 246 NHL games.
Yet, though he did not appear in games last year, Oshie still made his presence felt around the Caps at several practices and in the Caps 50 Fest Celebrations. And he was present at Capital One Arena when Ovi tied Gretzky's goals record, and on Long Island when he subsequently set the new mark at 895.
I addition, Oshie was at Washington Harbor this last February, when Backstrom and he unveiled a permanent plaque commemorating the 2018 fountain celly.
A proficient shootout scorer, Oshie rose to prominence while playing for the United States at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in a preliminary-round game against Russia.
After the initial three rounds of the shootout, Oshie was sent out for the next five rounds and converted four times, including the game-winner. He's also one of a handful of players who've scored on more than 50 percent of their shootout attempts since the NHL adopted the tiebreaker in 2005.
Could Oshie be announcing his return to the team? Time will tell.
