The Washington Capitals have entered a thrilling new chapter as captain Alexander Ovechkin has officially surpassed Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record. With the 2025 postseason just around the corner, the excitement is palpable.

But now that the crown belongs to Alexander Ovechkin, fans across the league are already turning their eyes to the future-- wondering who, if anyone, has the talent to one day chase down his historic mark.
Well, look no further to Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews, just two goals shy of breaching the 400-goal mark.

Auston Matthews teammates believe he can surpass Alexander Ovechkin's goal record

After Sunday's monumental day, the media made their way through various NHL locker rooms, interviewing players about Ovechkin's historic milestone.
Among the players asked about potentially surpassing Ovechkin's record was Maple Leafs phenom Auston Matthews.
When asked about the possibility of breaking the record, Matthews remained unfazed, casually responding that it's not something he's even thinking about.
«That's such a long way away or such a long way to go,» Matthews said after practice Monday. «And, you know, I don't even think I should be in that conversation.

«I mean, this guy just broke the record. I'm so far away from that, and I don't think that should be a focus on myself. I mean, it should be on Ovi, and rightfully so. It should be on Ovi, and what he's been able to accomplish in his career, and obviously this record being one of them.»
«It's pretty crazy,» the Maple Leafs forward said. «Obviously, I can't count that high. It's pretty astonishing, but yeah, maybe we'll see it down the line. '3-4' could do it.»

Auston Matthews still has a long road ahead before entering the conversation. He's not even halfway to the mark, and while a few more 70+ goal seasons could give him a shot, the odds remain slim.
As it stands, Ovechkin reigns supreme-- and his crown looks safe for at least another decade-- if not more.
More details to follow.
