The Washington Capitals are gearing up for Game 1 of the playoffs tonight against the Montreal Canadiens, and all eyes are on forward Aliaksei Protas as he continues to rehabilitate is skate blade injury.

As the team hit the ice for an optional morning skate, Washington Capitals staff turned their attention to Aliaksei Prtoas, who continues to work his way back from a nagging skate blade injury.
Though he suited up and took part in the session, it didn't take long for things to take a concerning turn.

Aliaksei Protas leaves morning skate early

Wearing a non-contact jersey once again, Aliaksei Protas completed just a handful of slow laps before heading to the bench.
Moments later, he was seen in a lengthy conversation with the training staff before being escorted off the ice and back to the dressing room for further treatment.
Needless to say, this isn't the update fans were hoping for.
Though the injury was originally described as a simple skate-blade cut, the timeline tells a different story.
It's been several weeks since the injury occurred, and Protas still doesn't appear close to game-ready.
He's skating well below full speed and has yet to be cleared for contact -- let alone full participation.
With puck drop looming this evening, it's becoming increasingly clear that Aliaksei Protas won't be suiting up tonight -- or anytime soon.
And with the team already dealing with multiple injuries, his absence is a tough blow for Washington's depth.
At this point, fans and the coaching staff alike are left waiting and hoping for better news -- because right now, Protas' playoff return looks anything but imminent.
More details to follow.
