The Washington Capitals took control of their first-round series Wednesday night with a convincing 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 2

This win was powered by goals from Connor McMichael and Dylan Strome and a show-stopping third period from Logan Thompson.
Connor McMichael and Strome scored just one minute apart early in the second period and flipped the game after Montreal's Christian Dvorak opened the scoring and McMichael later sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final seconds.
But it was Logan Thompson who stole the show late in just his second game back from injury, the Capitals netminder made 25 saves which is including a pair of game-saving stops in the third.
First, he denied Josh Anderson on a 2-on-0 breakaway with under 11 minutes to play and minutes later, he reacted quickly to get a stick on a deflection by Christhian Dvorak and was preserving Washington's lead.
The Capital One Arena crowd erupted with chants of «L-T! L-T!» in a loud ovation for Logan Thompson and Washington dominated the second period, outshooting Montreal 18-8 while keeping the Canadiens pinned in their zone.
The Capitals' experience, puck control and front of the net presence overwhelmed a young Montreal squad that showed signs of fatigue.
Despite the loss, Sam Montembeault was once again very good by stopping 29 of 31 shots and keeping his team in the game and he made key saves on Anthony Beauvillier and Nic Dowd to prevent the score from getting out of hand.
With the series shifting to Bell Centre on Friday for Game 3, playoff hockey returns to a packed Montreal crowd for the first time since 2017 and the Canadiens will look to regroup.
