Just now, the Washington Capitals have announced they have re-called goaltender Clay Stevenson from the Hershey Bears ahead of Game 5 against the Carolina Hurricanes.

According to Sammi Silber, from the Hockey News, Mitchell Gibson, who is the team's third goalie for this run, remains on the roster, so it is unclear what the reason for the move is or if it means anything regarding Logan Thompson or Charlie Lindgren's status for Thursday.
Washington is down 3-1 in its series against Carolina and needs a victory to force a Game 6 in Raleigh.

Stevenson has appeared in one NHL game, stopping 33 of 38 shots in his debut. The 26-year-old had a .888 save percentage this season with the Bears.

Washington Capitals recall Clay Stevenson from Hershey

This is an interesting roster move by the Capitals, to say the least.
The Hershey Bears are currently fighting for their third consecutive Calder Cup, but now find themselves without two crucial goaltenders.
While goaltender Hunter Shepard is holding down the fort in Hershey, having both Clay Stevenson and Mitchell Gibson away from the team for an indefinite amount of time has major implications to their success.
As of now, no one truly knows why Clay Stevenson has been called up from Hershey, and we probably won't have a good idea of the logic behind the roster move until puck drop at 7:00 PM ET.
Clay Stevenson made his NHL debut at the end of the regular season. Despite letting in 5 goals in his debut, the Bears goaltender refused to let it shake his confidence.
«I guess that shows you what the NHL is, right?» says Stevenson in the aftermath of a strong debut. «I thought I showed what I'm capable of out there. It's a special night, a lot of nerves, but I thought I played pretty free out there and gave myself the best opportunity to make the saves on the net.

«They were executing on a lot of plays tonight, as they should; look who's on the other side of that line there. I don't think there's anything to really hang my head about in that game, and I think that game gives me a lot of confidence to show what you can do in the NHL.»

What do the Capitals have in store for Stevenson? Time will tell.
