Washington Capitals defenceman Alex Alexeyev benched midway through Game 4
The Washington Capitals dropped Game 4 in a tough 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, putting them on the edge of playoff elimination. Despite showing flashes of a possible comeback, the Hurricanes held their ground and didn't let the momentum shift.
It was a night to forget for Cap's defenceman Alex Alexeyev.
Although the team looked sharper overall, Alexeyev struggled tonight. After a few critical errors, head coach Spencer Carbery decided to bench him midway through the second period. He didn't return for the remainder of the game.
Washington Capitals bench Alex Alexeyev
Since
Martin Fehervary went down with a knee injury, the door was open for Alex Alexeyev to step up. And while he's had moments where he's looked solid on the blue line, tonight just wasn't one of them.
Alexeyev appeared off-balance and lacked composure, but it was still somewhat unexpected to see head coach Spencer Carbery leave him on the bench for the rest of the game.
Carbery was likely leaning on his top performers in an effort to spark a comeback, but sidelining Alexeyev for that long sent a clear message.
Going by shot-attempt differential, Alex Alexeyev seems to have had his best game of the series, maybe by dint of not getting much ice time. He was on for the Gostisbehere goal.
