Recently, Alexander Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time goal-scoring leader.

The Washington Capitals are currently facing off against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena -- and if you wanted to be there today, you better have deep pockets.

Ticket prices climb to watch Alexander Ovechkin make history

To no one's surprise, ticket prices have surged across the market and a quick scan of Ticketmaster on Saturday night shows prices starting at $332.28 and went up to $1,155.96 -- and that's before taxes and fees.
Naturally, NHL enthusiasts across the league wanted to see the historic event live, but they paid the price today.
By early Saturday afternoon, two seats in Row 2 of Section 120 at UBS Arena were listed for a jaw-dropping $10,078 and the cheapest ticket in the lower bowl? $1,200.
Even upper-deck seats are pricey, with one in Section 316, Row 1 listed for $6,106.
Vivid Seats offers slightly lower prices with the most expensive ticket going for $3,702 in Row 16 of Section 102 and seats in the 300 level range from $545 to $1,664.
This matchup drew a big crowd and the Islanders are in a tight playoff race and plenty of Capitals fans are making the trip hoping to see Ovechkin pass Gretzky.
To the fans who dropped thousands to witness history -- congrats, your gamble paid off!
Even Wayne Gretzky himself was at Capital One Arena to witness Ovechkin tie the record -- and of course, he was there today.
Unless it's the playoffs or big outdoor games like the Winter Classic or Stadium Series, regular-season NHL tickets don't usually hit these prices.
Do you think fans got their money's worth today?
