NoVaCaps posted the first of their offseason coverage of the Washington Capitals, by looking at who on the team is most likely to stay, and who is certain to be moved, in their annual Trade Tiers.
The Capitals roster was broken down into categories, from players definitely going nowhere, to players that likely to be dealt, with some surprising names on the move.
Untouchables
Ovi: This one is a no-brainer, and requires no qualification, as he just finished having the most notorious season in NHL history to date. He's staying put.
Tom Wilson: The 31 year-old has 6 years left on contract, with a cap hit of $6.5M, scored 65pts in 81gms. Too valuable to team.
Dylan Strome: 28 years old, 3yrs left and cap hit of $5M, career-best 29g and 82p, and has one of best contracts in NHL.
Aliaksei Protas: 24 years old, 4yrs left, 3.375M cap hit, career high 30g, 36a, 66p, team-friendly contract, part of new, young core.
Connor McMichael: 24 years old, 1yr left, 2.1M, top-6, career best 26g, 31a, 57p, due for a raise, and becomes an RFA on July 1/26.
Almost certainly staying with the team
Ivan Mirischnichenko: 21yo, 1yr, $950K, produced at AHL level and is a highly-considered prospect, 20th overall pick 2022.
Logan Thompson: 28yo, 6yrs, $5.8M, 15-team no trade clause, career best 31-6-6 record, team starter, highly valued by team
Trade would improve the Washington Capitals
John Carlson: 35yo, 1yr, $8M cap hit, 10-team no trade clause, eligible for extension July 1st.
With the impressive play of the team's top prospects this past season, many have become expendable, as their own play diminished in production and playing time. Don't be surprised if all of the names from the last category are moved.
