We are a little over a week and a half away from the free agent frenzy in the National Hockey League. Free Agency begins in the NHL on July 1st with a lot of key players available, and that list includes several Washington Capitals players.
The key question heading into free agency is will the Washington Capitals resign any of their unrestricted free agents, or will they potentially look to improve on a team that overachieved during the regular season, but underachieved when it mattered when they fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.
Left winger
Andrew Mangiapane who the Washington Capitals got before the season in a trade with the Calgary Flames is ranked as the 34th best available free agent. Mangiapane had 14 goals and 14 assists in 81 games this past season for the Capitals.
Another Washington Capitals left wing
Anthony Beauvillier comes in as the 36th best available free agent. The Capitals got Beauvillier from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade deadline deal, and he fit in perfectly down the stretch while also scoring 2 goals and recording 3 assists. In the playoffs Anthony Beauvillier kicked it up a notch with a pair of goals and 4 assists in the Washington Capitals 10 playoff games.
Washington Capitals right winger
Taylor Raddysh comes in as the 46th best player available. Raddysh had 7 goals and 20 assists in 80 games this past season.
What will the Washington Capitals do this year in free agency?
Several former Washington Capitals players will also be available which includes Defensemen
Nate Schmidt who Capitals fans were happy to see finally get to hoist the Cup. Schmidt is listed as the 16th best available free agent.
Dmitry Orlov of the Carolina Hurricanes is also available as the 13th best available free agent. The former Washington Capitals defensemen was a key piece of the Hurricanes defense this past season.
Free agency begins July 1st, so it will be interesting to see who goes where, and who the Washington Capitals would consider especially after last season's free agency frenzy that helped turn the Washington Capitals into contenders.
