The Washington Capitals and the rest of the hockey world mourn the loss of a Ray Shero who passed away at the age of 62 on Wednesday.

The Washington Capitals and the rest of the hockey world grieve the loss of longtime NHL executive and Stanley Cup champion Ray Shero who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 62.

Pierre LeBrun broke the news on X Wednesday afternoon expressing his how Shero was an absolute class act throughout his career.
Awful, awful news. Ray Shero was an absolute gem. This will hit hard around the hockey world. On a personal note, he was so generous with his time and insight, in good times and in bad. A total class act.
He will be unbelievably missed. RIP, Ray.
Shero's passing was first announced by the Minnesota Wild. No cause of death was provided.
Shero was an assistant general manager with the Ottawa Senators from 1993 to 1998 and with the Nashville Predators from the team's expansion year until 2006.
Shero became the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2006 and played a key role in helping the team win the 2009 Stanley Cup, after falling short the year before.
People took to X to express their condolences following the tragic news.
With USA Hockey, Shero was part of the 2017 and 2018 United States Men's National Team Advisory Group, which selected the IIHF World Men's World Championship teams, and also served as associate general manager for the men's team at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
A native of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Shero served as general manager and executive vice president of the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2006-07 to 2013-14. During his tenure, he helped guide the team to a Stanley Cup in 2009 and was also named GM of the Year in 2012-13.
