Washington Capitals prospect Cole Hutson is headed to the 2025 NCAA National Championship game after playing a key role in Boston University's 3-1 victory over Penn State in the Frozen Four on Thursday night.
NCAA Ice Hockey posted the beautiful play on X shortly after.
WHAT A PASS! @ColeEiserman34 with the one timer to make it 2-0 Terriers!
Cole Hutson, a 2024 second-round pick of the Washington Capitals, continued his stellar freshman campaign by assisting on the game-winning goal in BU's 3-1 Frozen Four victory. The 18-year-old blueliner showcased his elite skill with a slick move to evade a forechecker in BU's zone, jumpstarting a 2-on-1 rush with New York Islanders prospect
Cole Eiserman. Hutson then threaded a perfect pass to Eiserman, who buried it to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead in the second period.
With his clutch assist against Penn State, Cole Hutson now has seven points (2 goals, 5 assists) in just three NCAA Tournament games this year. The standout performance also brings his season totals to an impressive 47 points (14 goals, 33 assists) in 38 games, an exceptional mark for a freshman defenseman.
Hutson had this to say to ESPN following his team's victory.
«It was fun. They play hard. They're a real fast team. I think that was one of our best games of the year, and our team found a way." -Hutson
Chris Cerullo of RMNB writes that Hutson's seven points in his first three NCAA Tournament games are already more than his older brother,
Lane Hutson, achieved for the Terriers during his college career.
"Lane only recorded four points in six tournament games. The Montreal Canadiens defenseman leads all NHL rookies in scoring this year with 64 points (6g, 58a) in 78 games." -Cerullo
Cole Hutson is one of the most electrifying talents in hockey today, not just at the NCAA level. It's rare to see a player, other than his brother, with his combination of poise and offensive instincts.
He has put up impressive numbers at Boston University this season finishing with 14 goals and 32 assists, 46 points in only 37 games.
The standout freshman helped lead the Terriers to the title game, where they'll face Western Michigan on Saturday at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
