The Hockey News conducted its first NHL offseason poll to gauge fan sentiment heading into the summer. Over 100 fans took the internet survey, with mixed-results concerning the Washington Capitals.

Four out of 5, or 59.8% were optimistic; 29% very optimistic; 10.3% between pessimism and optimism; and 0.9% pessimistic. Looks like the fans believe there is hope for the team.
What was key to the Capitals success this past season?
Most voters said Spencer Carbery was most responsible for the team's success, whose system appeared to click with the veteran-core, as well as the new additions to the team.
Another key was the team's bond, their team-first mentality, and chemistry on and off the ice. In fact, Caps have one of the closest rooms in the NHL.
Also, Pierre-Luc Dubois and other new additions contributed to team success, as well as John Carlson adding significant offense on the blue line. Finally, the GR8 Chase received some of the votes.
What is the biggest area of concern going forward to make a deeper run in the playoffs next year?
Two main areas were identified by fans; Ovi's career winding down, and John Carlson entering the final years of his career. Others saw more consistency on offense as a concern, and secondary scoring, and getting more contribution and scoring from the bottom-6.
Many fans also said that John Carlson left much too be desired, while defensive lapses and missed coverage were costly to the Caps.
Which Player was the biggest surprise this season?
63% cited Aliaksei Protas, and for good reason. The 23 year-old had a breakout year, scoring 30 goals and 36 assists, more than all of his past seasons combined.
18% of voters said Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Protas, both of whom received Selke nominations as the NHL's best defensive forward, while Martin Fehervary was voted as the Caps' unsung hero.
