The Washington Capitals affiliate Hershey Bears take Game 1 over the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in the AHL Calder Cup Semifinal round.
Even after blanking the Phantoms in Game 1, Bears coach Todd Nelson thinks there's still room for improvement.
«I thought we played a pretty good game. There were some times in the second period I didn't like. You know, we have to improve on that. But all in all, it was a pretty good hockey game. You know, as a coaching staff, we're happy that we came out like that. That means that we prepared in the right way.» - Nelson
Watch Bears defenseman Chase Priskie score the game's opening goal.
Priskie puts the Bears up 1-0 on the delayed penalty!
Ian Oland from RMNB writes that the Phantoms had a prime opportunity to even the score following back-to-back penalties to Bodan Trineyev (roughing) and Matt Strome (delay of game - puck over glass), resulting in an extended five-on-three power play. However, the Bears' penalty kill rose to the occasion, earning a thunderous cheer from the home crowd.
"Spencer Smallman would add a much-needed insurance goal shortly after as the Phantoms' defense sagged on a three-on-two Bears break." -Oland
Oland also writes that Bears goalie Hunter Shepard stopped 26 shots to record his fourth career playoff shutout and his first since Game 5 of the 2023 Calder Cup Finals.
