Three Washington Capitals forwards received consideration for the 2025 Selke Award, for the NHL's best defensive forward. Aliaksei Protas, Pierr-Luc Dubois, and Nic Dowd had their 2024-25 campaign efforts recognized as being among the league's best.

The actual winner, however, was Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers, taking home his second in a row, and third of his award-studded career.
Not since Doug Jarvis has a Washington Capitals player won the Selke Award. Jarvis won it following the 1983-84 season.
The Selke Award is voted by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association annually, and is awarded 'to the player who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game'.
Barkov also won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded annually 'to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice, and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in the community'.
Protas finished the highest of the three Capitals forwards, 22nd, and received two 4th-place votes and three 5th-place votes. The young center had a breakout year with 66 points (30g, 36a) in 76 games played, while also taking a role on the team's penalty kill unit.
Dubois was right behind his teammate Protas, finishing 23rd, with one 2nd-place vote and one 5th-place vote. The 26 year-old was used by head coach Carbery as the team's primary shutdown center, playing against the opposition's top skaters.
When Dubois was on the ice, the Capitals dominated 5 on 5 play, with 52.8% of shot attempts, 54.9% expected goals, 55.8% of scoring chances, and 57.2% of high-danger chances.
Finally, Dowd finished 36th in Selke voting, with two 5th-palce votes. The 35 year-old fourth line center achieved new career highs in goals (14) and points (27), while starting only 11.6% of his shifts in the offensive zone, the least of any player in the NHL with at least 500 minutes of 5v5 action .
Barkov was in a team meeting when he received the award in a surprise, special presentation from several boys and girls from Joe Dimaggio Children's Hospital, a fitting surprise for one who exemplifies leadership qualities in the community.
Congratulations to all who received votes.
