The Washington Capitals wrapped up their regular season yesterday against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and all eyes were on goaltending prospect Clay Stevenson as he made his NHL debut.
Well, it wasn't exactly the NHL debut Clay Stevenson was hoping for.
Coming into yesterday's matchup, Washington head coach Spencer Carbery elected to give the 26-year old goaltender the nod between the pipes, and Stevenson did his best to showcase what he's capable of.
Clay Stevenson showed flashes of promise in his NHL debut, turning aside 33 of 38 shots faced.
While he allowed 5 goals, it was a respectable showing-- especially against the high-powered offence of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Clay Stevenson speaks to the media following debut against Pittsburgh Penguins
After the game, Clay Stevenson spoke with the media and expressed that he wasn't disappointed in his performance-- in fact, he said he was proud of how he played in his NHL debut.
«I guess that shows you what the NHL is, right?» says Stevenson in the aftermath of a strong debut. «I thought I showed what I'm capable of out there. It's a special night, a lot of nerves, but I thought I played pretty free out there and gave myself the best opportunity to make the saves on the net.
«They were executing on a lot of plays tonight, as they should; look who's on the other side of that line there. I don't think there's anything to really hang my head about in that game, and I think that game gives me a lot of confidence to show what you can do in the NHL.»
Although Stevenson did'nt come away with the result he was hoping for, it was a strong debut and an important step forward in his development.
He'll take valuable lessons from the experience and look to come back stronger in his next outing.
